Rats chronically exposed to electronic cigarette vapor are just as like to demonstrate reduced viability of experimental wound flaps as rats exposed to cigarette smoke. Troiano C, Jaleel Z, Spiegel JH:  Association of Electronic Cigarette Vaping and Cigarette Smoking With Decreased Random Flap Viability in Rats.  JAMA Facial Plast Surg 2019, 21:5-10

Electronic cigarette vapor has multiple adverse effects on cardiac and respiratory function. Tsai M, Byun MK, Shin J, Crotty Alexander LE: Effects of e-cigarettes and vaping devices on cardiac and pulmonary physiology. J Physiol 2020; 598: 5039-5062

It is feasible to use electronic cigarettes in surgical patients to help them reduce consumption of regular cigarettes, although it remains to be seen whether this will improve outcomes. Nolan M, Leischow S, Croghan I, Kadimpati S, Hanson A, Schroeder D, Warner DO: Feasibility of electronic nicotine delivery systems in surgical patients. Nicotine Tob Res 2016; 18: 1757-62

Although some studies suggest that electronic cigarettes can be used to help smokers quit, the quality of evidence is low and futher studies are needed, especially to determine overall impact of these devices on population health. Hedman L, Galanti MR, Ryk L, Gilljam H, Adermark L: Electronic cigarette use and smoking cessation in cohort studies and randomized trials: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Tob Prev Cessat 2021; 7: 62
